The Chenango Canal Towpath Trail was initiated by the Chenango Canal Association in 1994 to follow the original canal towpath, but had been abandoned because of the cost of liability insurance. Word got out, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and in 2001, the five-mile Chenango Canal Project was reborn as the Chenango Canal Association, Inc an approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The Chenango Canal Towpath Trail stretches along the five-mile summit, from Woodman Pond at the south end in Eaton, through Bouckville, to the north end at Oriskany Creek, towards Solsville. The trail also extends into the Village of Hamilton - Full trail Map.
Trail Access Points:
Oriskany Creek- North end of the Towpath Trail
The Towpath Trail in Bouckville leads two miles North from the CCA Cottage Museum to Oriskany Creek where an aqueduct once crossed the creek. The hand cut stone abutments are still there, in excellent condition, and water from the canal spills into the creek heading north to the Erie Canal.
Parking is located nearby with room for 2-3 cars on Canal Road just past the creek crossing. Lock 76 is located North of Oriskany Creek at this location.
Walking 6.5 miles south from the CCA Cottage Museum leads to the Village of Hamilton.
An all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Publicly encouraging research for the preservation of the canal, surrounding waters and land,
while maintaining it as both a historic and public recreation site.
